SpaceX and NASA don't want to commit the same mistakes from the past but that doesn't mean that catastrophic failures cannot happen. For that, they created an abort system to prevent a disaster and save the astronauts' lives.

“We have to push innovation hard to make life multi-planetary...this is very important to secure the future of life as we know it and to ensure that the light of consciousness does not go out.” -Elon Musk You can tell who is in this type of business for politics and money. I probably wouldn't get onboard without having every single question answered. 1: what if there's a catastrophic failure just before launch? Do the escape system work then too? 2: if the failure happens just after the liftoff? 3: what if it happens just about the borderline between earth and space ? Is it capable of a re-entry? And if the rocket would explode, would there be enough time for the the emergency abort system to activate and the ability to escape unscathed from the explosion? Etc etc

Talking about innovation and pushing the boundaries. We humans use examples of nature, to recreate technology, for example using our own eye as an example to make cameras and therefore, still pictures frozen in time, so it would be feasible although inconceivably difficult, to attempt generating a magnetic field around the Spacecraft to aid in radiation shielding. I'm not sure how you'd pull this off, but if one could recreate the same conditions, that exist on Earth, in relation to the way it protects us from the suns harmful radiation and also has the fantastic ability to "dynamically" adjust it's shielding strength as a consequence of it's reaction to greater or lesser radiation streams. I know this is laman terminology and probably inaccurate to a certain degree, but I am sure you get the idea. Get a magnetic field around the Starship. What ya reckon?

This all sounds good and looks good but everyone who seen the shuttle blow up seen that it happen like boom no one nor did any computer sent out any alerts that something was wrong everyone at NASA was just as shocked as everyone who was watching. Not all of the time is it a catchable problem and thats a fact. Sure I'm pretty sure it will save lives in the future but I also know that lives will get lost as well. You can only save something when you are alerted of a problem even then it's a matter of how much time you have or the computer has do save whoever. Its easy to put a show on like this and be like wow it works. The main question will be , will it work when it really happens and that my friends I hope I never see. They way Elon leading the future why can't they make a electric motor that can blast those rockets into space. They have plans that can fly off of batteries. What do I know I'm sure plenty of people will let me know just how stupid I am in the replies. Ha Ha

Don't we also have to accept that unfortunately there will be loss of life. We must always try to avoid any loss of life. We must also accept that unknowns will result in incidents. The thing I like about NASA's approach now is it's actually creating separate entities that are independent. You don't make an omelette without cracking eggs.

Why would they manually activate the escape system? Wouldn't you want to know that the automated system was on point? Why not manually trigger an explosion in the booster and see if it wins or fails? The booster blows up 10 minutes after ejection.... STUPID, USELESS TEST.

I was feeling a genuinely good feeling of success and warmth in that success. I was watching Elon and noting that he should be proud of his effort and the effort of all those who worked on the project for the purpose of this outcome. It's working so much better than the systems that were in place during the 60's & 70's and that makes me very glad for the safety of the astronauts. Right-Arm Man!

It may sound optimistic and foolish but mark my words if I'm alive and 30 years Elon Musk will be the hero that made it possible.

The thing about Shuttle Challenger is that nobody knew anything was wrong until it was too late and the vehicle was in a million pieces. So a launch abort system would have been irrelevant in that example.

WHAT A great day for Elon and an even greater day for the advancement of science and technology for safer space launching systems safety of the ABSOLUTELY most precious cargo onboard any space flight, it's flight crew and passengers, ANY human life onboard WHENEVER an eventful liftoff suddenly turns into a devastating impact of failure be it of a minute nature to even one of a potential catastrophic, lethal tragic INCIDENT of that exact moment, was a failed flight, yet that same moment also was THE MOST IMPORTANTLY SUCCESSFUL ASPECT EVER FOR SPACE FLIGHT BEING "NO LOSS OF FLIGHT CREW AND ANY OTHER LIFE ONBOARD ALL IN THAT MOMENT BECAUSE OF ELONS BEING SO DEDICATED, INVOLVED PERSONALLY, AND THE MAN'S PASSIONATE BELIEFS AND MORE OVER ELONS DREAMING THE DREAM, ABILITY, ..... COURAGE TO TRY, BUT HIS HAVING GODZILLA SIZED BALLS TO KEEP ON FOLLOWING HIS DREAM, WHERE'S WOULD GIVE UP, ELON STAYED THE COURSE AND WHIPPED IT'S F'EN ASS! ELON, YOU THE MAN!! If you live your life in fear, don't climb into a rocket. Brave heroes don't need the needless expense of an abort system. I'd rather die in glory than to land in shame. The rest of you wimps can stay in your moms basement. I'll gladly climb into the next rocket anyone wants to test. For you see, I live in parallel dimension 1776. Correction: The loss of the Challenger crew wasn’t due to the absence of a launch abort system. It was the result of criminal management who ignored repeated warnings from engineers that they would die if it launched. It’s an absolute scandal that no one in NASA went to jail.
Random Number
Random Number 3 dagen geleden
What you're saying is true, but it's also true that the Shuttle had so many points of failure that sooner or later a disaster was bound to happen, negligence or not, with no survivable options for the crew. Shuttle was a terrible design and the fact that an abort system was deemed impractical early on made it even more terrible. Having said that, it's unforgivable that at least one and - arguably - both Shuttle tragedies came down to negligence in one form or another. In the case of Columbia, Linda Ham's dismissal of the engineer's concerns and outright blocking of attempts to assess the KNOWN damage to the orbiter (in my opinion) constituted criminal negligence bordering on manslaughter. But again, the lack of designed-in abort/survival options must come into play and I think it's a little facile to ignore that.

I don’t know where they got that figure from.. if you watch the actual spacex livestream, the dragon aborts less than a second after the “failure”(aka turning off the engines) but the rocket itself doesn’t explode for about another 10 seconds after (this was not the failure but a result of the aerodynamic instability from shutting off the engines )

It (Challenger) resulted in their deaths, not because they didn't have launch abort, but because the launch never should have happened. It was out of temp bounds, and they knew it, and Feynman proved it. The Shuttle however was inherently dangerous because of the tile system and the tank foam. But NASA made the call to launch Challenger, that loss was their fault, it was on them, not the engineers.
